Double the killer delete select all

The other day I blogged about this guy doing Perl scripting using Microsofts Vista Speech Recognition. You can check that one out here: Why programmers need their hands.

Well turns out that someone from Microsoft was giving a demonstration of Windows Vista speech recognition. Here is the video:

Why programmers need their hands!

After watching this video “Microsoft Vista Speech Recognition Tested - Perl Scripting” it reassured me to why programmers need their hands! Because talking/speech recognition will just not do!

Please note that this video is only worth watching from about 1 minute into the video till about 7 minutes.

AS3 Animation Benchmarking Utility, TweenBencher

Moses Gunesch the creator of FuseKit created a very nice open-source tool called TweenBencher. The utility can be used to chart animation performance through the Flash Player’s framerate over the time of the animation. This is a really nice tool and goes a long way to helping developers figure out which animation package to use and for what reasons.

My results showed that the top performers were (in order):

  1. Simple AS3 Tween (could not find a link for this one)
  2. TweenLite
  3. Tweener

Here is the output of my tests for every animation framework that is listed in the demo application.

Gmail IMAP support!

Gmail IMAP support is finally here. Late last night Google announced that they were offering free IMAP support for Gmail. I’m so glad for this since I manage all of my domains through Google Apps. It’s a slow rollout over the next few days and unfortunately it hasn’t made it to my accounts yet. Here are a few links from Gmail to get you going:

October 25, 2007, 4:22 PM : I now have IMAP support for my psyrendust.com domain! I just got it working on my iPhone and through Apple Mail.

Here is an official video on how to setup Gmail IMAP support for your iPhone:

Using DVDFab in Parallels to copy a DVD

Well it’s been a bit of a difficult time getting adjust to only using a MacBook Pro laptop for all of my day-to-day needs. One thing that I used to do pretty heavily is backup my DVD movies to my hard drive using Windows XP and DVDFab Platinum.

Well I tried installing DVDFab under Parallels Desktop 2.0. This didn’t work out so well. The copy process would get about half way through then it would error out. This was probably due to the DVDFab trying to write to the Parallels virtual hard drive.

Recently I decided to give it another try with upgraded software:

This time it worked great! The only difference here is that I set the Target directory to my \\.PSF\.Home\Movies folder. This translates to my /Users/larry.gordon/Movies/ directory in Finder.

I’ve successfully copied 5 movies at DVD9 quality with no errors. There was minimal memory usage (no more than what Parallels was using when running no apps). And my CPU levels never went above 50%.

In case anyone is wondering, my system setup is the following:

  • MacBook Pro
  • Processor: 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
  • Memory: 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM

On my next DVD copy I’ll add a few screenshots of the task manager and the activity monitor in this post.

Adobe MAX 2007 in Chicago

Busy busy busy! How can a person be so busy that he can’t even write in his blog???

Aaron Smith (Ruby AMF) and I hit up Chicago to attend the Adobe MAX 2007 conference. I have to say that it was a big treat for this nerd! A ton of cool sneak peaks. The ones that I found most interesting were Papervision3D and Flash Player Internals.

I want to take the opportunity to thank a few people that I met in Chicago at MAX 2007. The talks that I had with you all were inspiring!
